5 Ways to Improve Health as a Family

It can be tough to find time for your family when you are constantly running around.

It's even more difficult when one or more of you is not feeling well. It doesn't have to be this way!

There are many small things that you can do every day that will improve your health and the health of everyone in your family.

Here are a few places to start:

  1. Sleep well. Consider your sleep “hygiene.”  Protecting everyone’s sleep times can make a huge difference on all levels of our health. With a good night’s sleep, everyone can feel balanced emotionally and energetically. Children’s developing and growing brains certainly need sleep, but it is no less important for adults.

  2. Eat together as often as you can (at the table). You will be surprised to find that your children are more likely to eat healthier and consume less junk food when they eat with you. Eating together as a family can also help reduce stress and increase happiness in the home.

  3. Relax. We, as parents, and our children are constantly surrounded by stimulation. From videos on phones, TV shows at home, to homework and extracurricular activities/work. With all of these distractions vying for our attention it is important that you take time out of the day for relaxation as a family. The benefits of taking this time include improved mental health, decreased stress levels in both parents and kids, increased empathy between members of the family, less fighting with siblings over screen time privileges, etc., and more bonding moments.

  4. Get moving together. Exercising as a family is not only good for your health but also helps build memories and strong bonds. It's never too late to start, so grab your kids and get outside today!

  5. Listen, and communicate. The best way to ensure your family has healthy emotional development is by spending quality time together. Communication is an important part of this process, and the more you do it the better.

All these little steps can add up quickly and make a huge difference in how everyone feels day-to-day. You don't have to go on a crazy diet or spend hours working out -- just some simple changes can make a positive impact!

Remember that it’s not just about the physical health of your family. These small changes are rooted in emotional, energetic, mental, and physical well-being, so you will start to see a shift in the whole picture of health that your family experiences.

If you’re struggling to get everyone going, just start with yourself. You can become a role model for your children and other family members, which will encourage them to start joining in on your healthy habits.
